Mr. Bennet is ailing after suffering a stroke and Elizabeth doesn't dare to refuse Collins outright, telling him that she will respond later. Lady Catherine invites Elizabeth, Charlotte and Sir William to stay at Rosings because Collins has told her that the engagement is a sure thing so it gets awkward. More awkwardness ensues because of Mr. Darcy.I liked many parts of this that were the author's own writing a lot but Darcy's first proposal somewhere in the mdidle is a complete letdown. Sellers borrows heavily from Austen's wording which I never like very much because if I wanted to have more "in vain have I struggled" I could just read P&P again and not buy another book. Worse than that, they are having their quarrel about Bingley right before he starts and the proposal is a complete non-sequitur that doesn't follow naturally from the flow of the previous conversation. He KNOWS that she's angry at him and would have to be dumb as a doornail to start proposing at such a moment. The second proposal suffers from similar problems. Austen's words are quoted verbatim but they've been mixed up so that Darcy ends up assuming that she will accept his second proposal before it has been made or accepted ("I knew enough of your disposition to be certain that, had you been absolutely, irrecovably decided against me, you would have acknowledged it to Lady Catherine, frankly and openly...").If you can't fit Austen's words into the flow of your dialogue, write your own. I really enjoyed this book! The characters were spot on, and I thought the author's writing style really made me feel like I was stepping into the P&P world. Sweet romance, light angst (not too much) and a happy ending made this book a delight! Highly recommended!
