I hate to do it, really, as I was looking forward to this book. However, it really disappoints. At this point, the so-called sci-fi MMO is actually a fantasy Warhammer 40k ripoff. The new Ihm / Chaos realm arc is really immersion breaking due to how poorly it fits.I mean the Blackstar technology mostly made sense because they were interesting variants on explained technology. The Chaos-tech stuff just seems like a cop-out: as if the author needed to challenge his way too powerful protagonist but could think of nothing better than to bring gods and demons into the mix. The rate of change is also unrealistic. In this book and the last, the Ihm came up with at least five new game-changing capabilities that no other faction had even heard of. The Chaos-tech stuff literally appeared within a year or so in game time and it’s already integrated everywhere? Guided missile technology first entered service in WW2 as the V-weapons: how long did it take to build the first guided missile destroyer? A decade plus.Prescience alone would be a sufficiently interesting new capability to challenge the protagonist. Imagine a Chainbreaker type of character with prescience running around always one step ahead of the protagonist. Just finished this episode, and really enjoyed the action sequence. Eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series! (That said, this one had almost no character development or progression for BS as an organization in it. Unfortunately, it seemed very reactionary on the part of BS & Terran Empire, and the Imperium seemed way to OP and almost infallible in fleet actions. This episode really seemed more like a plot divide to set up the next part of the story rather than a well developed story itself which is why I’m only giving this one three stars). Still the series is enjoyable and worth reading.
